![]() (The Arrow keys without a modifier nudge selected symbols around.) It is hard to select an entire instrument symbol sometimes. Or some other means of navigating around a plot. I just think getting there is harder than it needs to be. Don't get me wrong, LXFree will make absolutely beautiful plots. The plot side of things is a little messier. A fix might be as simple as reordering a few sections. The documentation is a little old and occasionally references material in later chapters without making it explicitly clear that you haven't read something yet, but we're talking about it anyway. Doing this graphically, in the plot window, works very well but isn't always practical after the first hundred instruments. It's either a deal-breaker or I'm just being stupid. There is even a database field for "Group," though no apparent way to select all the members of say, the Cool Torms group and change the color for every instrument. It may be there somewhere, or perhaps some other means of editing data for groups of symbols meeting some criteria. I couldn't find a way to edit in a list view though, with sortable columns and multiple selections. The database side of things is very good in general. I gladly stick with it confident that its a mighty good choice that will keep evolving, with mine and other users help and feedback, from great to fabulous.Īnd seriously, if you look around, which are the comparable alternatives to the prize of 0 bucks?Ĭurrently at version 1.7.1, the symbol libraries are great-no moving fixtures, but that's okay with me. However I can tell since Im an old user that the software has evolved greatly and just keeps getting better and better everyday. Setting up devices like moving lights is also a bit of a weak spot I think. Ive never managed to make much sense of it. The part I like the least in this free app is the Symbol Editor and the way symbols and "Keys" are connected. Now anyone who understands the basics of lightdesign can create and edit a lightplot, easily and for free. Sending pdf attachments and a list of requests and questions to touringsites or guesting groups is finally a thing of the past! Its great to be able to communicate editable plots. Of course I also do all my lightplots in LXFree or LXBeams and encourage venues, collegues and others who may have any opinion of value regarding my plans to download this app. Its a strong side of the LXFree project with great potentials. The part I use most is its integration with LXConsole, Qlab MIDI, OSC and Applescript. Im an old Maclux user but since a few years I use only the LXBeams version of LXFree so maybe I shouldnt review the LXFree, but most stuff of any importance is in the free version as well so I guess it´s OK. The main difference between refractors and reflectors is that the former uses optical lenses, and the latter uses mirrors. Essentially, there are two major types of telescopes: Refractor and reflector. Best refractor telescope: Gskyer 600x90mm Refractor Telescopeīefore we get into what to look for in the best refractor telescope, it’s important to understand what that is. So, even if you use this as a starting point, it can grow with you in the future. If you do want to expand its capabilities, it’s compatible with a wide range of aftermarket eyepieces thanks to its standard mount. It’s not, however, great for trying to look into deeper space for planet closeups. That’s a relatively wide view of the night sky, which is useful for creating epic starscapes. It comes with a pair of eye pieces, as well as a magnifier, which makes the maximum useful magnification roughly 189x. This 400mm refractor comes with its own smartphone mount, so aspiring astronomers can easily capture photos and videos of what they’re observing. Included smartphone mount for easy astrophotographyĬapturing images of the night sky can be as complicated as you want it to be.Why we picked it: An included smartphone mount, bright aperture, and relatively wide field of view makes capturing epic astro shots relatively simple. Best for beginners: Celestron Astromaster 80AZS Plus, it’s built sturdy so it has a chance to survive the rigors of kid usage. It weighs in around 14 pounds, which makes it easy enough to throw in the car and move around if you’re looking for a better vantage point. The equatorial mount has a slow motion altitude rod to make fine adjustments simpler without the need for super accurate touch. In total, that gives this package a very flexible range from 105x all the way up to 525x. This scope has a 700mm focal length and comes with both a 4mm and a 20mm eyepiece, as well as a 3x magnifier. They set up easily and caring for them is simpler than something with a massive mirror inside. Refractors are a great place to start for kids getting into stargazing. Can’t look as deep into space as reflectors. ![]() Two included eyepieces, plus a multiplier for lots of viewing options. Why it made the cut: This refracting telescope is simple to set up, but offers enough options and high-quality optics to allow young astro-nerds to grow into it. Best for kids: Celestron PowerSeeker 70EQ Telescope Once you find what you’re looking for, the paraboloidal mirrors provide a sharp image that cuts down on aberration, which manifests as ugly fringes around the outside of high-contrast objects. You won’t find a ton of bells and whistles here, so be prepared to locate and track objects across the sky on your own. The tube is bulky, but it’s also very light weight so it’s easy to lug around and adjust when it’s sitting on the equatorial mount. This tube offers a 1,000mm focal length that pairs with either a 10mm or 20mm eyepiece for up to 100x magnification. Why it made the cut: Basic reflectors offer a great mix of value and reach and this Coleman model is extremely affordable.īasic reflectors provide a budget-friendly way to get into star gazing. Best value: Coleman Astrowatch Reflector Telescope Its 2,032mm focal length allows for deep looks into the cosmos depending on which eye piece you select. Celestron offers a wide range of accessories, so it’s relatively simple to mount your camera or even a smartphone camera for capturing epic shots. It’s a Catadioptric design with a massive 8-inch objective, which lets in ample light for viewing dim and distant objects. The telescope itself is no slouch, either. Celestron’s Sky Portal software provides a handy guide to the sky and helps you choose which area you want to observe. Celestron’s automated star tracking system can help you immediately locate specific areas of the sky and then move with them as they appear to travel. Stars move across the night sky-or at least they appear to. Extremely bright from ample light capturing. That’s also crucial if you’re going to be photographing the night sky. Plus, the large objective lets in tons of light. Why it made the cut: This robotic telescope is an investment, but its automated mount can move with celestial bodies across the sky automatically. ![]() Use them in commercial designs under lifetime, perpetual & worldwide. Hacking is quite an involved process in Uplink. Everything on the screen represents what the player character sees as he reads e-mails and news (the game’s way of delivering its storyline), buys upgrades for his machines and, of course, breaks into other computers. ![]() Uplink is an immersive game, played through a diegetic interface – you start it by registering as an agent of the eponymous Uplink Corporation, you play it by using your in-universe computer and it ends when your character either manages to break it or gets disavowed by Uplink. While the game does look similar to how movies portray hacking, it does so without relying on cutscenes, scripted setpieces and linearity – it’s all seamlessly integrated into its fairly open-ended gameplay. Like the graphics, those effects are nothing too fancy on their own but when combined with everything else about the game’s audiovisual aspect they serve an important role in creating Uplink’s trademark ‘Hollywood hacking’ feel.Īll this talk about how Uplink feels remarkably similar to 1980s and 1990s hacker films fortunately doesn’t mean that the game has anything to do with the ‘cinematic experience’ trend in modern video games. Uplink’s sound effects consist of various high-pitched beeps and phone dialling noises as well as occasional speech samples when hacking voice identification systems. They’re all pretty great, especially Karsten Koch’s track ‘Blue Valley’. Unsurprisingly for tracker-based music, all the songs were composed by people and groups related to the demoscene movement. The game’s atmosphere is further enhanced by its soundtrack which consists of electronic/IDM/ambient music created using software known as trackers. It’s nothing technologically fancy – just a a bunch of buttons and menus, small text, a world map, a few static images and a dark background – but it nails the ‘computers in films’ look perfectly with its stylized interface, black and blue (with occasional red and green indicating failure and success respectively) color scheme, animated text and the occasional use of real photographs. ![]() This was undoubtedly achieved in part by the game’s strong art direction: from start to finish, Uplink looks like a playable version of a hacker-themed movie like WarGames or Sneakers. While Uplink might not be the first ‘hacking simulator’ ever created ( System 15000 predates it by over 15 years), it’s probably the most important one as it codified most of the elements of this (admittedly pretty small as most games that feature the concept of hacking generally reduce it to a simple minigame) genre and popularized it among gamers. The only way for Introversion to succeed was by making the kind of games nobody else was making – and this is exactly what they did, developing unique games about things ranging from hacking to administrating a prison to annihilating humanity in a thermo-nuclear war. When they made their first game, they couldn’t compete with big-budget projects as creating contemporary-looking games required manpower and technology they didn’t have but they also couldn’t just rely on nostalgic gamers looking for something more oldschool as the retrogaming market was much smaller than it is now (not to mention that current definition of “retro” is much broader than the one from the beginning of the century). Introversion Software, the company behind Uplink (not to be mistaken with a Half-Life standalone expansion by the same title) is quite an unusual one: a small British software house created after most of the small British software houses dissolved and the market became dominated by AAA developers but before the indie boom and the popularity of crowdfunding which made businesses like that profitable again. It is regularly served as a main meal throughout Australia, where it is considered a staple of pub food. It was offered in restaurants in Adelaide as early as 1953. Australia Ĭhicken parmigiana with chips and salad, a common serving in AustraliaĬhicken parmigiana was known in Australia by the 1950s. Upon arriving in America, Italian immigrants began to take advantage of America's affordable meat market, incorporating chicken into parmigiana. Many restaurants also offer chicken parm sandwiches. A recipe for chicken parmesan was published in The New York Times in 1962. A recipe was published in the 1953 issue of the New York Herald Tribune that used frozen fried chicken patties or fillets along with other processed foods to make a version of the dish at home. Ĭhicken parmesan is included as the base of a number of different meals, including sandwiches and pies, and the meal is used as the subject of eating contests at some restaurants. It has been speculated that the dish is based on a combination of the Italian parmigiana di melanzane, a dish using fried eggplant slices and tomato sauce, with a cotoletta, a breaded veal cutlet generally served without sauce or cheese in Italy.
